Fall Roof Maintenance Checklist for Halifax

A few hours of preventive maintenance in the fall can save you thousands in repairs come spring. Here's exactly what to check before the snow arrives.

Fall is the best time to inspect and prepare your roof for a Nova Scotia winter. Catching small issues before freeze-thaw cycles set in can prevent minor problems from becoming major ones.

Here's a practical checklist to work through each October:

Clean your gutters and downspouts. Blocked gutters cause water to back up under your shingles and can lead to ice dams in winter. Clear out leaves and debris, and make sure downspouts are directing water away from your foundation.

Inspect your flashing. Flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents is a common entry point for water. Look for lifted, cracked, or missing sections and have them resealed before winter.

Check for missing or damaged shingles. Walk the perimeter of your home and look for shingles that are cracked, curled, or missing entirely. Even a small gap can allow significant water infiltration.

Look for granule loss. Check your gutters for an accumulation of granules — a sign that your shingles are aging and may need attention soon.

Inspect your attic. Check for daylight, moisture staining, or mould — all signs of a compromised roof. Also confirm your attic ventilation is working properly, as poor ventilation contributes to ice dam formation.

Trim overhanging branches. Branches that hang over your roof can scrape shingles in wind and deposit debris that holds moisture. Trim them back before the first storm of the season.

If your inspection turns up anything concerning, don't wait until spring. We offer free estimates for homeowners considering a replacement and can often schedule work before the weather turns. Call us at 902-442-6625.
